Escapada on Masada

So you completed your Escapada on Masada – we hope you had a great time and learnt a lot!!  Some of your answers will be saved on your phone or posted to your social media channels, but here are some on the informational answers for you to check:

  1. A columbarium in the ancient world was where pigeons were housed and raised. Pigeons were kept in order to send messages outside of Masada. You can say that Twitter is a modern day messenger pigeon. What message did you write? (give yourselves points out of 3)
  2. Did you read all about the incredible water systems that Herod built to store water on Masada? There are 64 stairs going down into the big cistern. (give yourselves points out of 4)
  3. A fort was built here, because this was the main access to Masada. The guards at the fort could watch the access roads from here. Did you find the different locations? Who got your best echo? (give yourselves points out of 6)
  4. No, you would not expect a swimming pool on top of a desert mountain 2000 years ago! We learn from the existence of the pool that Herod was a genius engineer and builder, and that there was plenty of water on Masada owing to him. Also the Roman’s certainly didn’t drive the Jews of Masada to mass suicide by starving them or robbing them of water, they had plenty! Did you prepared a synchronized dance in the pool? (give yourselves points out of 5)
  5. Did you complete a grand tour of the Western Palace, did you include the throne in the throne room and the stunning mosaics? (give yourselves points out of 5)
  6. We learn from archeological finds that Herod first meant this building to be used as a stable, and in the time of the Great Revolt, the Jews made it into their synagogue. Biblical scrolls were found here.  This was one of the very few synagogues that existed in the time of the Second Temple.  At times, a Jewish scribe can be seen writing a Torah, here by the ancient synagogue on Masada – perhaps symbolizing a posthumous victory of the Jews over the Romans.  (give yourselves points out of 5)
  7. The breaching point is the place where the Masada perimeter wall is broken, because this is where the Romans breached the mountain. You can see the ballista balls and arrowheads that they used to bombard the walls and their defenders. (give yourselves points out of 5)
  8. Did you find this pic and take a team selfie in front of it?  (give yourselves points out of 3)

  13. As Elazar Ben Yair said: Long ago, the Jews resolved to serve only God, not the Romans or any other master.  The people of Masada are considered national heroes in Israel. They chose to fight and die as proud and free Jews rather than be taken as prisoners and forced to be slaves to another nation. This is a basic value of Israel today and the Israeli army. (give yourselves points out of 3)
